Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
